And the Mountains Echoed by Khaled Hosseini
Reviewed by Jessica

To say Khaled Hosseini  is an amazing writer is a vast understatement. Hosseini is able to create the most vividly tragic, yet hopeful stories that touch us deep within. From the loss one man suffered during his youth, a child was given a better life in The Kite Runner; and from the brutality of an arranged marriage and war, a woman was able to be saved by love in A Thousand Splendid Suns. Khaled Hosseini’s latest novel, And The Mountains Echoed, is no different in the way it will reach inside you and pull at your heart strings.

I enjoy books that do not read in a predictable pattern and with And The Mountains Echoed, that definitely holds true. While for the most part the novel brings up unsavory and incredibly tragic moments that I wished and hoped were otherwise, it is for these moments that I fall even more madly in love with Khaled Hosseini’s writing. I believe there are many books out there where the writers do not have the courage to let their characters truly unfold and come to life. Either the writer is too concerned with making the ending a happy one or the writer is too focused on shocking the audience that they lose sight of what the story is about and end up ruining it and the beautiful characters they created. Khaled Hosseini does a brilliant job of carefully balancing well developed characters with a superb story. While the whole of And The Mountains Echoed  is bittersweet, it is a lovely bittersweet that doesn’t turn acidic. The story begins with the heart breaking tale of two siblings torn apart by circumstances beyond their control. It is a novel that encompasses the greatest of all human emotions and actions and not just of the two children in the beginning, but of parents, cousins, and caretakers throughout the generations from 1952 to 2010 and that spans all over the world. And The Mountains Echoed will have you hooked with the first paragraph. It is another unbelievable piece of work brought into the world by the courageous and wonderful Khaled Hosseini that you won’t want to miss!
