Recent-ish bits and bites from the world of books, as compiled by Sutter.

In December, Merriam-Webster announced that “culture” is its 2014 World of the Year. Other words of the year include “vape” from the Oxford English Dictionary, and “exposure” from Dictionary.com.

Also in December, Judy Blume revealed the plot for her highly anticipated new release, In the Unlikely Event, due to arrive this summer. In the Unlikely Event will be Blume’s first novel for adults since 1998, and will center around a series of plane crashes that occurred in New Jersey in the 1950s.

Academy Award winner Lupita Nyong’o will star in the upcoming film adaptation of Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s acclaimed novel Americanah, which was the 2013 winner of the US National Book Critics Circle Award. Science Fiction author Neal Stephenson will be joining the startup group Magic Leap and will have the title of “Chief Futurist.”

Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg has launched a new book club in 2015 to challenge himself and others to read a new book every two weeks. The book club’s first selection will be Moses Naim’s The End of Power.

NBA All Star Kareem Abdul-Jabbar will release his first novel, based on the life of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s character Mycroft Holmes, brother to Sherlock. Abdul-Jabbar’s novel, Mycroft Holmes, will be released this fall.

And finally, everyone seems to be getting themselves a Poet Laureate nowadays.
